Shamatha, or "calm abiding," is one of the oldest meditation techniques on record and the root from which most others grow. The practice isn't about emptying the mind but training sustained, single-pointed attention: choosing one object of focus, noticing when the mind wanders, and returning to it, patiently, as many times as it takes.
David Magone teaches this introduction with the depth of someone who's spent over twenty years in the lineage. One of the first non-Tibetan teachers authorized to teach Mangalam Yantra Yoga, a Buddhist meditation practice dating to the 10th century, David formally trained by Khenpo Migmar Tseten Rinpoche, Harvard University's Buddhist Chaplain and a Tibetan meditation master trained by the Dalai Lama's own private tutor,
In this session, David walks through the working parts of shamatha (posture, breath, object of focus) at a steady, unhurried pace built for beginners. All you need is a seat and a few quiet minutes to start building a practice that holds up for a lifetime.
